If you follow the instructions, your information will be sent to the Division of CME at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where it will be entered into the CME database. Sponsored by Department of Global Health, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Target audience:  Residents, fellows, researchers, academics, healthcare providers in the area of HIV/AIDS.

Statement of purpose:  Over 40 million persons are infected with HIV worldwide, with 4-5 million new HIV infections occurring each year.  Some countries in sub-Saharan Africa have 50% prevalence rates in highly impacted communities and up to 33% prevalence in the general population of young adults.  Thus, prevention is critical even as care and treatment issues represent life-saving emergency interventions.  Even in the US , the number of incident HIV infections is quite stable, an indictment of prevention efforts to date, and too many persons come late in disease. Every physician dealing with HIV needs to be updated as to the current advances in therapy and prevention.

Learning Activities:

After participating in this CME activity, participants should be able to:

a. describe and discuss recent advances in HIV/AIDS clinical care and therapy, including antiretroviral therapy and the diagnosis and therapy of opportunistic infections, sexually transmitted diseases, and tuberculosis.
b. describe and discuss HIV prevention modalities and their application to community-based, school-based, job-based, or clinic-based venues.
c. describe and discuss issues in pathogenesis and laboratory science that are fundamental to the clinical care and public health enterprises.
d. assess research methods and identify strengths and limitations in a variety of study designs, e.g., observational, clinical trials, operations research.
